Scott Dickson

9,209 consecutive days of riding (25+ years). Last day missed was 5/28/1983

Schott Dickson winning Paris-Brest-Paris 1991 "Let's go left here guys. I know a short cut" said Scott. Those were the last words I remember as start of the most bonked ride of my life. Fast forward several hours of sitting on Scott's draft. I have no idea where we are or how to get home anymore. Panic sets in followed by waves of bonk and shear human misery. We were almost home and somehow Scott navigated us to a perfect down draft from a cookie factory. He was casually describing what a great pasta meal he had last night which tipped my bonk into insanity. I thought I was a hot shot cat 3 racer. I've been schooled by famous Iowa Scott.

Everyone, please meet Scott Dickson.

Scott is a legend on the road and has "schooled" countless cyclists in the Midwest for decades. He has won 422 races since 1965 including 3 U.S. Masters Championships and 3 Paris-Brest-Paris. Besides his race result, what sets Scott apart from normal racer is how much he rides. Simply, Scott rides a lot. Check out these saddle sore numbers.

As of August 13, 2008

  • 9,209 consecutive days of riding (25+ years). Last day missed was 5/28/1983.
  • 32 years without missing a day of riding (1974-80, 1982, 1984-2008)
  • At least 20 miles per day from 1988 to 1998 (10 years)
  • 744,849+ lifetime miles since January of 1973. That's an average of 21,000+ miles per year.
  • 583,888 miles, 1,506 centuries, and 381 race victories since his last day off the bike (5/28/1983).
  • 1,857 lifetime century days (days with 100+ miles).
  • At least one century per month for 320 consecutive months.
  • Dec. 5 & 13 are the only calendar dates on which he hasn't ridden a century.

Scott's incredible log is even more impressive considering he rode all of the mile outside mostly in harsh Midwestern states like Iowa, Kansas and Ohio. All you warm weather cats, winter riding in Midwest means frozen water bottles and 3 inch icicles on your chin type of riding.

So, where does super genome like Scott come from? Des Moines, Iowa it turns out. Scott was born 1949 (59 years old now) and began riding at age of 15. Scott took up riding shortly after his father died in 1964. He started to do overnight bike trips with friends and entered first race in 1965 at Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa. Rest is a history (of rides).

Scott had a 10 year run of never missing a day and riding at least 20 miles per day. But in 1998, Scott was injured by 70 mph car sideswiping accident. As result, he had to reduce the daily riding to 3 miles minimum due to injury. Since then, Scott is back to normal schedule. These days, he rides at least 50 miles per day between March and November. In the coldest winter days, he rides at least the standard 20 miles per day. Only time he rides less than 20 miles these days is on ice days or all-day rain days.

All road warriors who thinks they put mega miles on their bike... face toward Iowa, get on your knees and bow your head. Scott has dropped and lapped you more times than you can count.

Today, Scott lives in Newark, Delaware. If you want to ride with him, head to Iowa in July for RAGBRAI. He is one of probably 5 remaining people who have ridden every RAGBRAI which is in 36th year running in 2008. Oh my, that's another story.
